Ann-Margret Wimmerstedt, AIS at Little Fireweed, April 2018
Homer-based mixed media artist Ann-Margret Wimmerstedt worked with teacher and elementary students at the Little Fireweed Academy (kindergarten through second grade) in Homer to create a large-scale mural focusing on Alaskan migrations. During this process, the students learned different painting techniques while studying whale, bird, and caribou migrations. Over 52 children participated in the final collaborative work, as well as making their own pieces. A culminating Art Gala and Celebration was held with parents, providing an opportunity for the students to present their individual art piece and discuss the different techniques they had learned. The painted migrating animals were incorporated into the final ceremony inside and outside the yurt, with plans underway for final installation.
