Annie Duffy March 2014

The idea of an object being able to transmit some sort of intangible meaning about both the maker who crafted it and the culture it will pass through is magnetically compelling to me. For this exhibition, I focused primarily on the notion of “traces”, or the marks and impressions that are left behind when one being passes through a space. These are the important signs that tell the stories of our lives and the lives of many others, both animate and inanimate. Those marks are then found and observed, and interpreted, by others. They become a genesis of narratives that can be both personal and profoundly universal. In my case, they tell the story of where I have been and what I have seen. Specifically, these pieces tell the stories of what I have seen during my time in Alaska, on certain days, and during certain moments. They are time and memory capsules that I hope can convey to others the beauty, and sometimes the awkward naked uncertainly of passing through my subarctic landscape, natural and human.
