Bunnell Street Arts Center’s Artist in Residence (AIR) features Alaska, national and international artists for residencies of varying lengths, from one week to one month. Bunnell offers a 1000 square foot studio/gallery space and lodging in a private room with a private bath and living/kitchen area in a private apartment.
Bunnell’s Artist in Residence program has evolved with support from Rasmuson Foundation, US Artists, Homer Foundation, ArtPlace America and the National Endowment for the Arts. Today, it is primarily supported by private donors, foundation grants, and application fees.
Visiting artists are provided with a studio, lodging, and stipend. In return, they are asked to develop new work and offer an educational engagement opportunity for the local community. Residencies are not available between May 15 and September 15. Please explore the residency formats below.
1) Alaska AIR, Bunnell’s International Call for Applications runs September 15 – November 15 each year through CaFE.org This is a juried residency award that provides round-trip travel to Homer, a studio, lodging in a private bedroom and private bathroom in a shared apartment, and a stipend of $2000. Apply for a $25 fee at callforentry.org.
2) Artist-driven residency: provides studio space and lodging with revenue-generating partnership/collaboration with Bunnell to support the studio, lodging and administrative overhead of the residency.
3) Sponsor-driven residency: inspired by a specific project or theme such as a mural site, earth stewardship, recycling, etc, a sponsor funds a residency including an artist stipend, lodging and travel to Homer at a specific amount (from $5000 including administration, depending on duration, materials, etc)
3) Fee residency: provides lodging with a private bedroom and bathroom and a shared kitchen/living area for $500 per week. Artists are responsible for their own materials, food and travel costs. Availability of studio space depends on other scheduled programs, the time of year and the scope of the artist’s project.
