Debbie Piper, AIS at Paul Banks Elementary, March 2017
“Their studio experiences included exploration with clay, discovering the properties and possibilities of clay, experimenting with texture of both man-made and natural objects, slab and pinch pot techniques, as well as using an extruder to make embellishments and adhering clay to clay with slip. During the process of glazing, color choice, craftsmanship, and the use of underglazes were explored.
Our final class was dedicated to examining the finished pieces and choosing a favorite. An artist statement was written by each child, answering many of the same questions they had asked of me on that first day. Students’ learning was reinforced by returning to “Nautical Twist” and the creative process. Bringing the residency full circle, as such, brought applause from one of the classes and validated that “they got it.” This was a memorable closure for me, knowing students had enjoyed making that strong connection. The residency went smoothly, with staff being helpful, appreciative and as eager to learn as their students.” -Debbie Piper Narrative Report, excerpts
