Eddie Wood, AIS at Tyonek, May 2018
Eddie Wood, percussion musician, storyteller and dance instructor from Homer, spent a week at the Tebughna High School in Tyonek, Alaska teaching percussion and dance through sound, story, and movement performing arts. Eddie worked with 30 students, ranging from kindergarten to high-school age, as well as 7 staff and several members of the community. Eddie shared techniques to shift the creative process from visual to oral to movement/dance through observation of spontaneous sculpture and exploring what purpose, origins, intentions they hold. Upon learning that the high school prom was scheduled for the week after Eddie’s departure, classes were held in social partner dancing. This aided in both full participation at the school event, and a packed community dance performance with percussion ensembles.
