Jeff Szarzi at Flex, April 2019
“The Artists in the Schools (AIS) program has been an integral part of the arts education experience at Flex for a number of years. The annual residency introduces students to new and unique forms of artistic expression. Former flex teacher Jeff Szarzi guided us through the processes of creating carious ceramic forms, including tiles, bowls and mugs.
Over the course of Jeff’s two-week residency, students and staff learned a great deal about ceramic forms as well as decorative techniques. The first week focused on artistic expression through carious methods, including slip-trailing, mono-printing, carving, stenciling and sgraffito. Students took time to experiment and hone their processes before creating a tile around the theme of “A Second Chance.” These tiles will become part of a larger mosaic that will hang at the school. ” -Flex Alternative School, Administrative Narrative Report excerpt
