Kim McNett at Paul Banks Elementary, May 2021

Three second grade classes at Paul Banks participated in a week-long Artist in the Schools Program through the Bunnell Street Arts Center. The residency gave our students an opportunity to learn from local artist Kim McNett. During this residency, students used a nature journal as a tool to foster curiosity, promote observation, and celebrate the fascinating wonders of the natural world just outside the school. Kim focused on the National Core Art Standards through an art integration model that connects students’ artistic experiences to nature, the creative process, craftsmanship, and lifelong learning.

“It was amazing to watch the student’s responses to their work. To turn a simple drawing into an in-depth look at the beautiful nature surrounding them was a fantastic confidence builder. And when the students reviewed their final drawings and written observations, their reactions were priceless. They are so proud of their work. They are very excited to share their drawings with their families and friends.”
