Anchorage artist, Michael Conti, explores hockey’s symbolism and cultural significance as a northern sport contrasting grace and violence, blood and ice, the professional sports industry and cultural obsolescence. “On Hockey” consists of wall pieces, video and sculptural objects. The exhibit includes an installation for Daliance de Homer for a performance on February 28 at 6 pm by composer Christopher Jette and dancer Becky Kendall.
Comedy / Tragedy / Hockey consists of wall pieces, video and sculptural objects. Anchorage artist explores hockey’s symbolism and cultural significance as a northern sport contrasting grace and violence, blood and ice, the professional sports industry and cultural obsolescence. Almost entirely colonized by White culture hockey was invented by Canada’s First Nation people and depends on ice, which is quickly disappearing from our planet. Conti’s installation features a series of paintings about Derek Boogaard, cast hockey pucks containing wisdom teeth, bottle caps and pain killers, and an extended hockey stick. Additional include hand carved hockey stick(s), carved goalie mask and interactive sculpture made of an altered air hockey table as well as videos.
